Attendees from SNG, Howarth Contractors and Hounslow Council at topping out

SNG a step closer to completing 69 affordable homes in Brentford

Sixty-nine affordable homes in Brentford are a step closer to completion following a traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony held on Friday 11 October. Key partners involved in the project from SNG, and construction company Howarth Contractors were joined by guests from Hounslow Council, including the Mayor, Cllr Karen Smith, to see the final construction beams installed.

The development is located on London Road opposite Syon Park on the site of a former Royal Mail depot. When complete there will be 32 apartments for London Affordable Rent, 27 for Shared Ownership and 10 for London Living Rent, a scheme which helps customers save for a deposit to buy their own home. The scheme also has office space facing London Road which will support local employment opportunities.

The scheme is being built by Howarth Contractors and delivered in partnership with the Greater London Authority’s Homes for Londoners: Affordable Homes Programme 2016-2023. Energy efficient apartments are spread over two buildings which benefit from a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system. The homes will also benefit from solar panels, green landscaping, and a rooftop amenity space. Ten per cent of the apartments will be wheelchair accessible with the remainder capable of being adapted for wheelchair use.

Matt Bird, SNG’s Regional Managing Director (London & East) commented: “It’s fantastic to arrive at this key milestone where you can begin to picture new customers moving into their brand-new homes. The London Borough of Hounslow continues to be a key borough for us as we provide much needed affordable and quality homes for local people.”

Ben Searle, Managing Director at Howarth Contractors, said: “It has been a pleasure to work alongside SNG and reach this special milestone in the construction of our all-affordable development. The topping out ceremony marks an exciting point in our journey providing much needed homes for the residents in the London Borough of Hounslow which when completed next year, means we have delivered over 400 affordable units to SNG over the past few years.”

Cllr Tom Bruce, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Assets, Regeneration and Development, Hounslow Council, commented: “I am delighted to see this significant milestone reached in the delivery of much-needed affordable homes in Brentford. This development is an important part of our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable homes that are accessible to all and part of our wider regeneration efforts in Brentford, providing footfall to local businesses and onto the high street. With options for London Affordable Rent, Shared Ownership, and London Living Rent, this project will offer new opportunities for Londoners to secure a home in our borough. I’m particularly pleased of the architectural merit and the wider amenity it brings to the community.

“This project is a key element of our wider placemaking strategy, where we are not only building homes but creating vibrant, inclusive spaces that support the growth and well-being of our communities. This partnership between Hounslow Council, SNG, Howarth Contractors, and the Greater London Authority showcases the power of collaboration in addressing London’s housing crisis and delivering inclusive growth.”
